Today’s Big Stuff

7.30.20

It's Thursday. There are 96 days until the presidential election. A madman floats delaying the election, the American economy has its worst quarter on record and Trump and Barr take their Portland show to some new cities.

Note: We're gonna keep it a little shorter than usual today. We decided this morning should belong to John Lewis. And of course idiot tweets from the idiot president. So if we're not cracking as many jokes or cussing as much today, that's why. As we've watched congressional hearings this week, it has been hard not to feel the pain of seeing a Congress that doesn't include John Lewis but does include Gym Jordan. It can be very easy to despair right now. To fear for the future while fearing the present. There are 150,000 dead Americans, and there is really no end in sight. We know you're not the type to even think about letting fatigue or disillusionment win the day, but we all have those moments when the mountain seems too steep to climb and our legs feel like they can't go another step. But Mr. Lewis left us a parting gift to deal with those moments. Please take a moment to read his final op-ed, to be published on the day of his funeral. That man was prepared to give everything for America to live up to its promise. Are we? More: New York Times

Note two: As Geoff Bennett points out, after President Obama's eulogy today, the former president will have eulogized Lewis, Elijah Cummings and John McCain at funerals where Trump was not welcome. If he's not fit to honor our greats, he's sure as hell not fit for office. Here's hoping he finds a way to keep his damn mouth shut this morning.

Note three: RIP Malik B of The Roots.

Note four: The NBA is back today, and we're so happy we could cry, but we're not gonna because it's 2020 and our tears will probably somehow infect someone with something or just melt our faces off.

Note five: Let's not lose sight of the fact that the president of the United States is openly running on segregation. "Suburban lifestyle dream" is not just the name of some kick-ass acid, it's also a racist bullhorn where the whistle used to be. Hell, even the NYT says so, and they're allergic to the word racist. Note six: Everybody just cool the fuck out about Biden's veep. If we don't like the person he picks, we'll freaking learn to. And whomever is trashing Kamala Harris behind the scenes is really doing their candidate and their party a real disservice.

Note seven: We hope y'all have an amazing day. Hang in there. You're doing wonderful in really shitty circumstances. Love to you all from TBS.

Nope, no way, no thanks

In April, Trump said it was "propaganda" to suggest he was thinking of changing the date of the election. This morning he suggested doing just that. With horrifying economic news out, the Senate completely fucking up a good response and the world turning its attention to a real president and a late hero in Atlanta, Trump is probably just trying to get some attention. We don't care. This shit is not ok, and this is what he does. He floats bullshit trial balloons, and then sees what he can get away with. Well, the Constitution is pretty damn clear on this, and we're not moving the election. Suck it up, you orange asshole. More: CNN

Jaw-dropping

While Republicans dither and try to pass $8 billion worth of military hardware, $1.75 billion for a new FBI building and about $377 million for some West Wing renovations, the American people are hurting badly. This morning we found out that last quarter, the U.S. experienced the biggest GDP drop in our history, with the economy shrinking 32.9 percent. Another 2.2 million Americans filed for unemployment last week. More than 30 million are unemployed. And last night, Mitch McConnell went on Fox to try and bluff his way to a bullshit bill, saying his members are fine with passing nothing. The only person in America who would buy that shit is a Fox viewer. And possibly Steny Hoyer. Regardless, Mitch is full of shit. Hold his feet to the fire and get a good damn package. Our nation is begging for it. More: CNNAssociated Press

Invasion

Yesterday DOJ announced that it will expand the shit it did in Portland to Cleveland, Milwaukee and Detroit. Gosh, what the fuck do those cities have in common? Oh yeah, they're in swing states. According to Jeff Asher, while Cleveland and Detroit don't publicly provide crime data, violent crime was down in Milwaukee in June by 29 percent. So yeah, this ain't about crime. It's pretty clear at this point that our people in the House aren't going to anything about this, so we're on our own. Stand up, and let these assholes know they're not welcome. Stand up like Portland did. Hell, Portland has Trumpland so confused they literally don't seem to know if they're coming or going. More: USA TodayNew York Times
